The Northern Lights, a celestial wonder, are about to transform Hexham's Moot Hall into an immersive art spectacle. On August 7-9, 2026, the Cosmic Frequencies Festival will host 'Aurora DeepTime', an exhibition that brings the awe-inspiring beauty of the Aurora Borealis to life. This isn't your typical art show; it's a scientific and artistic collaboration that uses cutting-edge technology to recreate a rare and intense natural phenomenon.
The exhibition focuses on the Northern Lights events of May 2024, a period of intense solar storms that captivated the region. Visitors will experience these storms through a unique sensory journey. The exhibition utilizes data from three space probes, capturing X-ray, magnetic field, and ion flux information during the solar storms. This data is then translated into vibratory sounds and modulations of colored light, creating a mesmerizing and scientifically accurate representation of the Aurora Borealis.
The team behind Aurora DeepTime is a diverse group of experts. Fiona Crisp, a Professor of Contemporary Art at Northumbria University and Hexham resident, leads the project. She's joined by interdisciplinary sound artist Dr. Jorge Boehringer, mathematician Dr. Daniel Ratliff, space artist Luis Guzmán, solar physicist Dr. Steph Yardley, and composer and sound artist Dr. Bennett Hogg. This interdisciplinary approach brings a unique perspective to the exhibition, blending art, science, and technology in innovative ways.
The exhibition will be open to the public for free on Saturday, August 8, from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sunday, August 9, from 10 am to 3 pm. A free talk will be held on Sunday at 1:30 pm, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the science and art behind Aurora DeepTime.
